Station Square

Completed 2002

A one-stop riverfront entertainment destination

  • Square took a difficult riverfront property bound by railroad tracks and created a multi-use entertainment district that connects to the water via pedestrian walkways.

  • The Station Square site, formerly owned by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, was sold to Forest City Enterprises in 1994 to begin the retail development portion of the project.

  • A pedestrian walkway allows visitors to easily cross the still-active railroad tracks to access the waterfront docks.

  • Station Square features 65 stores, restaurants and entertainment venues, as well as a dock for the Gateway Clipper Fleet. The signature dancing fountain was created by the firm that designed the Bellegio Lake in Las Vegas.

Overview

This former station for the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad on the southern bank of the Monongahela River represented a dramatic step forward in riverfront retail development. To the delight of Pittsburgh history enthusiasts, Station Square has maintained the historical character of the site while reclaiming its status as a hub for visitors and city residents.

Developed by Forest City Enterprises throughout the 1990s, with the addition of the Bessemer Court entertainment district in 2002, Station Square features 52 acres of indoor and outdoor shopping right across the river from downtown Pittsburgh.

One of the city’s premiere entertainment districts now includes docks that accommodate boats from yachts to kayaks. New restaurants now look onto a signature fountain created by the firm that designed the Bellagio Lake. Water, with a bit of Las Vegas showmanship, has become entertainment.
